Dental Anxiety

If you fear visiting the dentist, you're not alone. Even patients who visit their dentist regularly may still feel anxious about it.

If you suffer from significant dental anxiety, or are about to undergo a longer more complex treatment, our dentists may recommend oral conscious sedation.

Oral sedation can also be helpful for those patients with a severe gag reflex.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedatives are pills or liquid medications prescribed by your dentist and taken by mouth.

An initial dose is typically taken about one hour before the dental appointment. In some cases sedation may include a dose on the night proceeding the procedure to mitigate anxiety-related insomnia.

During your appointment, you will remain awake and responsive, and won't feel any pain.

Is sedation dentistry right for you?

Many people miss out on essential dental treatment due to dental anxiety and other factors that make dental treatment particularly uncomfortable for them. There is no need to miss out on the treatment you need and deserve to keep your mouth healthy!

If you are affected by any of the following, talk to your dentist about oral sedation for your upcoming dental treatment:

  • High anxiety about dental treatments
  • Difficulty getting numb with local anaesthetic
  • Sensitivity to touch, smells, sights and sounds
  • Highly sensitive teeth
  • Fear of needles or pain
  • Exaggerated gag reflex
  • Difficulty opening mouth - TMJ issues
